Skeleton on a Garmin Instinct Crossover AMOLED outdoors, the real hands over the drawn movement
A skeleton watch: the whole movement is open under the dial, and raising your wrist starts it running. Eleven wheels with the tooth counts of a real calibre, 480:1 from the barrel to the tourbillon cage, and a flying tourbillon at six o'clock whose cage carries the seconds.
- The gearing is real: eleven wheels with the tooth counts of an actual movement. The barrel turns once in eight hours, the hour wheel once in twelve, and the reduction to the tourbillon cage is 480:1.
- The rate is real too: after a wrist raise the escapement beats eight times a second, 28,800 an hour, and the hands step forward with it.
- Flying tourbillon at six o'clock: the cage turns once a minute and its pointer marks the seconds.
- The metals: gilt brass, blued steel and rhodium, each lit as its own material. A highlight travels across a wheel as it turns, the jewels are rubies in gold chatons, and every bridge lays a soft shadow on the train below.
- Two gauges you choose: Body Battery, stress, watch battery, step goal, weekly intensity minutes, floors climbed or Pulse Ox. Each sector carries the icon of what it shows, and a long press opens that app.
- Five colourways: rose gold, blued steel, rhodium, salmon and jade. The colour applies to the movement; the gilt chapter ring and the applied indices stay as they are.
- Drawn for your screen: the dial is rendered separately for every screen size, so the wheel teeth are as sharp at 218 pixels as at 454.
- Always-on display: the movement stays as dim line art on black, every wheel at the angle the current time implies, then fades up into the lit dial.
- How long the movement runs after a wrist raise (10 seconds, 5 seconds or off) and the wake fade are both adjustable. Everything is drawn on the watch - no account, no phone app.
