Skeleton Bridge

A skeleton watch face with the dial kept open, so the hours and the minutes stay easy to read. The whole movement sits on one narrow diagonal beam. In the two bays beside it a pair of gauges shows what you choose, each one geared to its own rack and pinion.

• One beam: the whole movement stands on a single diagonal beam, upper left to lower right. It is a bridge truss, two chords with a zigzag web between them, footed on the chapter ring at three points.
• Two geared gauges: one in the lower left bay, one in the upper right. Each has a toothed rack under its own bridge, a pinion and a drive wheel above it, and a cursor riding a graduated arc. As the reading changes the rack swings, the pinion and the drive wheel turn with it, and the cursor moves along the arc.
• Twelve readings on each gauge: Body Battery, stress, watch battery, step goal, intensity minutes this week or today, floors climbed, Pulse Ox, sleep score, move bar, solar intensity or heart rate. An icon on a metal tab says which one it is, and a long press opens the app behind either gauge.
• Real gearing: the wheels are laid out as a mechanical going train, with a barrel that turns once in eight hours, an escape wheel of twenty teeth and a beat of 28,800 per hour.
• The escapement: a lever escapement, with the balance under its own vee-shaped cock. The balance rocks while the movement runs.
• Small seconds: the seconds hand is out on the beam, on the fourth wheel's own arbor, in the accent colour.
• The winding train: a ratchet wheel under a large slotted screw, a click and click spring, the crown wheel and the winding pinion. The stem points at the watch's lower right button.
• Hours and minutes: two central hands in polished banded steel, each with a soft shadow under it. The chapter ring carries the minute numerals 05 to 60 in fives and a minute track.
• The finish: steel structure with satin faces, the truss chords filed and polished along the edge, a mainplate cut back to the metal that carries load. Ruby jewels, blued screws, and the wheels in gilt gold or rhodium silver.
• Seven accent colours: oxblood, blue, green, violet, bronze, rose and black. The colour is on the chapter ring, the seconds hand, the fill of both arcs and both cursors. With black the ring is neutral and everything that points stays oxblood.
• Always-on display: the whole movement stays on the screen, dimmed. Both hands, both arcs, both cursors and their icons stay with it, and the chapter ring is a fine line.
• Made for each screen: the dial is rendered at its own size for every watch, round or rectangular, from 218 to 466 pixels.
• Both gauges, the accent colour, the wheel metal, how long the movement runs after a wrist raise (10 seconds, 5 seconds or off) and the fade in from always-on are all adjustable. Everything is drawn on the watch - no account, no phone app.
